Joseph Vernelle Phillips

Joseph Vernelle Phillips Our curator, the son of Ralph Ogle Gentry and Arzetta Slane, was born March 23, 1930, at Fort Morgan, Colorado. He grew up in Morgan County, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming; Mesa Rica, New Mexico, Clewiston, Florida; and Virginia Beach, Cape Charles and Norfolk, Virginia.

After graduating from Maury High School at Norfolk, he attended the University of Virginia, where he majored in history.  While still at the University, he became interested in the paintings of Old Masters, and he began to accumulate records of Old Masters in private hands. Today, that collection comprises about 8,000 records of paintings by Old Masters throughout the world.

Mr. Phillips is an accomplished linguist and speaks fluently seven languages. He has traveled all over the world, visiting museums and art galleries, and he is familiar with most of the Old Masters in museum collections, as well as those in private hands.

He has a very large collection of books about paintings and other fine arts, as well as museum catalogs and the sales catalogs of the large auction houses.

He formerly worked for McGraw-Hill Book Co., but for most of his life, he was employed as a reporter or editor at The Virginian Pilot in Norfolk. He retired several years ago and now resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
